Buccal Fat Removal Surgery Or Cheek Fat Reduction Surgery.

Buccal fat is the fat pad located between the cheekbones and jawbone. The size of this fat pad varies among individuals, and in some cases, excess buccal fat can create a chubby-cheek appearance.

Buccal fat removal surgery is designed to reduce this fat, giving the lower cheeks a slimmer, more contoured look. By enhancing the definition of the mid-to-lower face, this procedure helps achieve a V-shaped face, creating a more sculpted and photogenic appearance. Removing the fat can also highlight your natural bone structure, especially the cheekbones and the area between the cheeks and jawline. This procedure is also known as cheek fat reduction surgery.

Who Can Undergo Buccal Fat Reduction?

You might consider this procedure if you:

  • Are unhappy with your chubby cheeks
  • Maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle
  • Desire a V-shaped facial contour

If gently sucking in your cheeks gives you the look you want, buccal fat removal may be a suitable option for you.

During your consultation, be ready to discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, any allergies, family history of illnesses, and current medications, including herbal and vitamin supplements, as well as tobacco and alcohol use.

Dr. Mukul will assess your face, bone structure, and soft tissue envelope. He will also take photographs to evaluate your facial profile. He will discuss the expected results of cheek fat reduction surgery, along with potential risks and complications.

Procedure

The cheek fat reduction procedure can be done either in a hospital or as an in-office treatment, and you’ll be able to go home the same day.

It’s a simple procedure where local anesthesia is applied to numb your cheeks, or you may receive mild sedation to keep you comfortable. A small incision is made inside your cheek, allowing the buccal fat pad to be gently removed. The incision is then closed with dissolvable stitches—so no visible scars!

After the procedure, you’ll need to keep the area clean by using an antiseptic mouth rinse twice a day. For the first few days, a liquid diet is recommended, followed by soft foods as you heal. You’ll also get a mild painkiller to manage any discomfort.

Here’s what to expect after surgery:

  • Some swelling in the treated area
  • Mild numbness along the suture line
  • Bruising inside the cheek

Recovery takes about 10 to 15 days, but most people are back to work in just 2-3 days. You’ll start seeing results in about 2-3 weeks as the swelling goes down, but the final outcome will become more apparent in 2-3 months.

Risks and complications

This procedure comes with minimal risks. Common side effects, such as swelling and bruising, typically subside within 10 to 15 days.

Serious complications, including injury to the salivary duct, infection, abscess formation, the need for a revision procedure, or asymmetry, are extremely rare. One of the key benefits of this procedure is that it leaves no visible scars.
